CBM (Cubic Meter) Calculator - Shipping Volume & Dimensional Weight

CBM (Cubic Meter) Calculator is an online tool built for e-commerce merchants, freight forwarders, logistics managers, and warehouse teams to instantly calculate shipment volume (CBM & CFT), dimensional (volumetric) weight, and chargeable freight weight.

Whether shipping full container loads (FCL), less-than-container loads (LCL), or international air express packages, this calculator provides real-time calculations across various units and package types.

Key Features

  • Multiple Package Lines: Add as many package rows as you need for mixed shipments, master cartons, and pallets.
  • Unit Conversions: Switch between Centimeters (cm), Inches (in), Meters (m), Feet (ft), and Millimeters (mm) for dimensions, and between Kilograms (kg) and Pounds (lbs) for weight.
  • Real-Time CBM & CFT Calculations: View individual package volume and total consolidated volume in both Cubic Meters ($\text{m}^3$) and Cubic Feet ($\text{ft}^3$).
  • Dimensional Weight Calculator: Supports industry-standard divisors:
    • 5000 — Standard Air Express / Courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS international)
    • 6000 — IATA Air Cargo standard
    • 4000 — Domestic express carriers
    • Custom Divisor — Forwarder-specific agreements
  • Chargeable Weight Determination: Automatically compares total actual gross weight against volumetric weight to highlight whether your shipment is billed as dense cargo or volumetric/bulky cargo.
  • Shipping Container Estimator: See how much of a 20ft, 40ft, or 40ft High Cube (HC) ocean container your shipment will occupy, with visual capacity bars.
  • Save & Load Custom Presets: Save commonly used carton sizes (such as “My T-Shirts”, “Shoe Box”, “Amazon Master Carton”) to your browser storage and reload them in one click.
  • Manifest Export: Copy a structured cargo manifest to your clipboard to paste directly into quotation requests, purchase orders, or shipping emails.

How to Calculate CBM (Cubic Meters)

Cubic meter represents the volume of a three-dimensional space measuring 1 meter in length, 1 meter in width, and 1 meter in height.

Formula by Dimension Unit

  1. Centimeters (cm):

    CBM=Length (cm)×Width (cm)×Height (cm)1,000,000×Quantity\text{CBM} = \frac{\text{Length (cm)} \times \text{Width (cm)} \times \text{Height (cm)}}{1,000,000} \times \text{Quantity}
  2. Inches (in):

    CBM=Length (in)×Width (in)×Height (in)61,023.74×Quantity\text{CBM} = \frac{\text{Length (in)} \times \text{Width (in)} \times \text{Height (in)}}{61,023.74} \times \text{Quantity}
  3. Meters (m):

    CBM=Length (m)×Width (m)×Height (m)×Quantity\text{CBM} = \text{Length (m)} \times \text{Width (m)} \times \text{Height (m)} \times \text{Quantity}
  4. Feet (ft):

    CBM=Length (ft)×Width (ft)×Height (ft)×0.0283168×Quantity\text{CBM} = \text{Length (ft)} \times \text{Width (ft)} \times \text{Height (ft)} \times 0.0283168 \times \text{Quantity}

Converting CBM to Cubic Feet (CFT)

1 CBM=35.3147 CFT1 \text{ CBM} = 35.3147 \text{ CFT}

CFT=CBM×35.3147\text{CFT} = \text{CBM} \times 35.3147

What is Dimensional (Volumetric) Weight?

Carriers charge for freight based on space as well as actual weight. A shipment of lightweight foam pillows takes up far more aircraft space than a heavy box of metal bolts of the same weight.

To account for this, carriers calculate Dimensional Weight (DIM weight).

The Dimensional Weight Formula

Dimensional Weight (kg)=Length (cm)×Width (cm)×Height (cm)DIM Divisor\text{Dimensional Weight (kg)} = \frac{\text{Length (cm)} \times \text{Width (cm)} \times \text{Height (cm)}}{\text{DIM Divisor}}
  • Air Express Divisor (5000): Used by DHL, FedEx, UPS for international courier shipments. $1 \text{ CBM} = 200 \text{ kg}$.
  • IATA Standard Air Freight (6000): Standard ratio where $1 \text{ CBM} = 166.67 \text{ kg}$.
  • Domestic Express (4000): Used by select regional carriers where $1 \text{ CBM} = 250 \text{ kg}$.

Chargeable Weight (Billable Weight)

Chargeable Weight=max⁡(Total Gross Weight,Total Dimensional Weight)\text{Chargeable Weight} = \max(\text{Total Gross Weight}, \text{Total Dimensional Weight})
  • If Actual Weight > Dimensional Weight: Shipment is classified as Heavy / Dense Cargo and billed by actual weight.
  • If Dimensional Weight > Actual Weight: Shipment is classified as Bulky / Volumetric Cargo and billed by dimensional weight.

Standard Shipping Container Capacities

Container Type Internal Dimensions (L × W × H) Max Volume Capacity Usable Volume (Practical) Max Cargo Weight
20ft Standard (20’ GP) 5.90 m × 2.35 m × 2.39 m ~33.2 CBM (~1,172 CFT) ~28 – 30 CBM ~28,200 kg (~62,170 lbs)
40ft Standard (40’ GP) 12.03 m × 2.35 m × 2.39 m ~67.7 CBM (~2,390 CFT) ~56 – 60 CBM ~28,750 kg (~63,380 lbs)
40ft High Cube (40’ HC) 12.03 m × 2.35 m × 2.69 m ~76.3 CBM (~2,694 CFT) ~66 – 70 CBM ~28,600 kg (~63,050 lbs)

Note: Usable volume is typically 80%–90% of maximum theoretical volume due to carton stacking gaps and pallet dimensions.
